Talk X-Men with the voice actors from X-Men ’97, Ross Marquand (Professor X) and David Errigo, Jr (Mojo, Gladiator, Leech, Banshee).
The Pokémon franchise, a global phenomenon, is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, drawing heavily from folklore, Shinto religion, and yokai mythology. This presentation explores how these cultural elements have shaped the design, behavior, and lore of Pokémon characters. Many Pokémon are inspired by yokai, supernatural entities from Japanese folklore that range from mischievous spirits to protective deities. For instance, the character Ninetales was based on the kitsune, a fox yokai known for its intelligence, magical abilities, and multiple tails, while Gengar is often linked to the bake-danuki (shape-shifting raccoon dog) or kappa (water-dwelling yokai). By examining these cultural influences, we gain a deeper appreciation for the Pokémon universe as more than just entertainment; it is a modern reinterpretation of ancient beliefs and traditions. This exploration not only enriches our understanding of the franchise but also underscores the enduring relevance of folklore and spirituality in contemporary media. Ultimately, Pokémon serves as a bridge between the past and present, inviting people worldwide to engage with Japanese culture in an accessible and imaginative way.
